Regular lodge meetings:

September 8th, 7:30 p.m. October 6th, time TBA (often a fund-raising dinner for the Foundation)

St. Hans Picnic, June 23

North Glenmore Park, from 3 p.m. on. Head south on Crowchild Trail through Lakeview and on into the park. Look for a big Norwegian flag and lodge sign. “Bring your own everything.” Ron is bringing kubb, a classic Norwegian game, and wood for a fire. There’ll be s’mores! Send your name and contact information to secretary@sofncalgary.ca if you would like last-minute updates.

Sports Weekend, June 13-15 what a great time it was!

In addition to the Laft Hus Festival events, there was a talk Friday evening about ‘Crossings 200’, a celebration of the arrival of the first organized group of Norwegian settlers. And on Sunday a bus tour on the ‘Scandinavian Trail’ stopped at several places rich in the history of Scandinavian settlement.

Goats on the roof, lundehund dogs, fjord horse, Viking re-enactment, Scandinavian dancers, kubbe game, mobile axe-throwing truck, demonstrations in wood carving, rosemaling painting, hardanger embroidery & lefse making, Crossing 200 exhibit, Norwegian items for sale, food trucks and other vendors.

Syttende Mai 2025

Was celebrated with a parade, games, hot dogs, and ice cream treats on May 17th at the Scandinavian Centre. This year “Crossings 200” acknowledged the start of organized Norwegian migration to America. Threatening clouds but no rain on the parade!

Lutefisk Dinner, March 1, 2025

Very enjoyable! Looking forward to the next lutefisk dinner. Thank you to all the volunteers who made it happen.

Folk Dance Workshop in Red Deer

Mikkel Thompson and Ginny Lee, who have led many workshops in Calgary (and around the world) were the instructors at Fanatullen’s folk dance workshop in Red Deer last year. A great way to celebrate Fanatullen’s 40 years!  Mikkel and Ginny will be back in Red Deer for this year’s workshop,  October 3-5, 2025.

District IV Convention, 2024

In Bismarck, North Dakota, from June 27-29. Delegates were Ron Reine and Alison Wiigs. Russ Wiigs attended as Zone 4 director. His term was over, and Karen Larson of Red Deer is the new zone director. Congratulations, Karen!

Calgary European Film Festival (CEFF)

Songs of Earth, the film we most hoped to get, was shown on Monday November 4th, 8:15 p.m., at the Globe Cinema, 617 8th Ave SW. Scenic beauty worthy of the big screen! Recommendations of recent Norwegian films to consider for the future are most welcome. They should be award-winning and not available for streaming.
