ROOTS – a one-year program for North Americans with Norwegian ancestors, an opportunity for youth 18 – 27 at Stavern Folk High School in Norway.

Folk high schools are one-year, non-formal boarding schools for young adults, focused on personal growth, community, creativity, and cultural understanding rather than exams or grades.

There are more than 80 folk high schools across Norway, offering a wide variety of subjects, from outdoor life, arts, and music to global studies, social engagement, and Norwegian culture. Many schools welcome international students. You can learn more about the folk high school system here:
www.folkehogskole.no/en

Our school is starting a new program in 2026-2027 with the goal to let youth reconnect with their «roots» and experience daily life in Norway in an inclusive and meaningful way.

It is a special program for youth who are descendants of Norwegians who emigrated to America from Norway. The goal is for them to become well acquainted with Norwegian culture and to connect with their Norwegian relatives, learning more about their Norwegian heritage. The only requirement is that they have contact, or at least contact information, for relatives in Norway whom they would like to visit.

You can learn more about our school and our subjects here:  www.stavernfhs.no/roots
